STOP NOW WITH HELP FROM THE WISCONSIN QUITLINE AND FREE NICOTINE REPLACEMENT MEDICATIONS

The stop-smoking facts:

n     Wisconsin has about 1 million smokers.  Almost 8,000 smokers die each year from smoking-related diseases at a total cost to Wisconsin of about $2.2 billion in health care costs.

n     It is difficult to quit without help. Nicotine is as addictive as heroin. Only about 5 percent of smokers can stop without some form of help. More than a third of those who seek help have been able to quit smoking.

n     Help is available.  Beginning Jan. 1, the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line (1-800-QUIT-NOW) will make available free stop-smoking medication to all state residents who call. Callers can choose from nicotine gum, lozenges or patches in two-week starter kits.

n      Now is the perfect time to quit. The price of cigarettes have increased by $1 per pack. The state of Wisconsin is using part of the money to expand services to help people quit.
