The State Legislature voted to cut most programs in the State of Wisconsin by 5%. Unfortunatey, even though the tobacco control program has shown very positive outcomes and has made great strides in reducing smoking rates among youth and adults, it was cut by 55%.
How will this affect Community Action For Healthy Living Coalition?
Our coalition has always felt that it was important to have more than one funding stream, so that we were not totally dependent on the State for our existence. Our coalition applied for a role as Lead Agency for four counties and received six. These Counties include Brown, Calumet, Menominee, Outagamie, Shawano, and Waupaca. We have doubled the population we serve and have taken a 55% cut in funding for tobacco control. Our goals for 2010 will focus on Implementation of the Smoke Free Air Statewide Policy, Program Sustainability, and tackling the emergence of other tobacco products.
We will accomplish this through the following activities:
- Outreach and Education to Key Local and State Leaders;
- Identifying Supporters through Grassroots Activities with Education and Follow Up To Involve Individuals in Implementation Efforts
- Media Advocacy Efforts
- Outreach and Education to Workplaces
- Active Participation on Statewide Tobacco Control Workgroups and Committees.
Our commitment to tobacco prevention and control remains strong and our volunteers are passionate. We will continue to be one of the best tobacco-free coalitions in the State of WI and we will continue to make progress.
