What Does Surgeon General Richard  Carmona report about Second-hand Smoke?


On June 27, 2006 the Surgeon General of the United States Released the latest scientific report on Secondhand Smoke.

"The evidence is clear--There Is NO Safe Level of Secondhand Smoke!"


Second-hand smoke is the third leading preventable cause of death.  It kills 53,000 non-smokers every year in the United States.
Second Hand smoke causes cancer.  Exposure to Second Hand smoke causes 3,000 lung cancer deaths per year to non-smokers.

It is linked to an increased risk for heart disease in nonsmokers.
It is linked to 72,000 deaths from coronary heart disease annually.
The effects of second hand smoke reach everyone who comes in contact with the smoker, regardless of the size of the room.
Secondhand smoke has more chemicals in it than the smoke inhaled directly by a smoker through a filtered cigarette. (4500+)

For Children
Infants and children who are exposed to second-hand smoke are at greater risk of developing pneumonia, bronchitis, and asthma and are more likely to need hospital care.
Infants exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), also known as crib death.
Children with asthma who are exposed to second-hand smoke have more attacks and the attacks are often more severe.
Secondhand smoke causes ear infections in children.
