Calling All Youth!

The youth subcommittee is actively involved in ensuring that there is prevention, intervention, and advocacy programs available in the schools and throughout the community. They provide resources utilizing best practices as established by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) to educators, law enforcement personnel, and group leaders.

A successful tobacco control program must incorporate many approaches to the issue of youth smoking. Currently, we have programs available in the following areas in the community:

> Youth Prevention with Peers Educating Peers (Teens Against Tobacco Use); providing resources for educators and youth group leaders to prevent initiation of smoking

> Youth Access Issues--WISCONSIN WINS--an initiative involving law enforcement, teen volunteers, local health departments, and retailers to keep tobacco from being sold to minors

> Tobacco Cessation program for teens who are already addicted to nicotine. "NOT" Not On Tobacco, a program developed by the American Lung Association, is available in our middle and high schools. Youth who attend these programs are trying to break their addiction to tobacco.

> Youth Diversion is a program involving partnerships with law enforcement, the judicial system, and coalition members to provide education in lieu of a citation to youth who unlawfully possess tobacco products

> Youth Advocacy involves youth taking an active role in the community by increasing awareness of tobacco issues, such as the deadly effects of secondhand smoke; protection of all employees for smoke-free worksites and entertainment venues, development of media messages, programs to educate retailers about advertising tobacco products to teens and encouraging policy makers to do the right thing for communities to keep all people healthy regarding secondhand smoke.
